4 Tips for preparing for a concrete floor

Before you receive your order of bespoke ready-mixed concrete from one of the South's leading suppliers, there are a number of thing you need to do to prepare in order to ensure your concrete flooring installation is as smooth and hassle free as possible.

Prepare the ground

If it’s not poured over a solid base, concrete can crack and crumble, no matter the size of the area. So, in order to ensure the strongest, level concrete surface, you’ll need to prepare the ground first. This involves digging down to the required depth; for foundations or floor slabs, remember to allow enough depth for the subbase, damp-proof membrane and the concrete. Before you begin, ensure all stones, plants and other debris is cleared from the area.

Lay a subbase and damp-proof membrane

Once you’ve excavated the site of the pour to the required depth, you’ll need to lay the subbase. It’s important to understand what your concrete will be used for, as the thicker the subbase the heavier the load the concrete will be able to support. If appropriate, you’ll also need to install a damp-proof membrane as this helps protect from rising damp and stops the fresh concrete from drying out too quickly.

Build a frame to keep the concrete in place

Next, you’ll need to build a frame in to which you will pour the concrete, so it holds its shape while it sets. The frame is typically made from 25mm thick timber planks that are well supported so they don’t move or fall down while the concrete is poured. Remember, the frame will need to be as thick as the final concrete slab.

Prepare for the concrete delivery

The final step is to ready your site for the delivery of the pre-mixed concrete. This not only ensures a smooth transition from pump truck to the pour site but also helps speed up the process, so you reduce the risk of the ready-mixed concrete beginning to cure too early. Preparing the site includes clearing paths for easy access, laying planks or other support on slopes or uneven ground and making sure you have all the manpower and tools you need.
