How to lay a concrete shed base
The success and durability of your concrete shed base will largely depend on how well you prepare for the pour. Your shed base will need to be at least 75mm thick, whilst an additional 75mm will need to be allocated for a layer of sub base underneath. Excavate the area to the required depth, removing any rocks and debris before compacting the soil.
You will need to create timber frame that will be used to keep the concrete in place as it cures. You can use 25mm timber planks and saw them to the length required, using a builder’s square to ensure that the corners are exactly 90º before nailing the planks together. Measure diagonal corners to ensure your frame is a perfect rectangle or square.
Add 75mm of hardcore and compact the surface until it cannot be compacted any further. It is recommended that you use a specialised tool for this, like a tamper, for best results. The hardcore will provide a sturdy base for your concrete to sit on, without risk of sinking under the weight.
Order ready mix concrete
Whilst you could attempt to mix the concrete required yourself, if you are inexperienced then there are several things that could go wrong. For example, you may mix too much or too little to suit your needs, which can be incredibly inconvenient and cost you more money. Not to mention; mixing concrete by hand is hard work, and requirest a very delicate balance of ingredients.
At Wright Minimix, our ready mix concrete is very affordable and conveniently delivered to you on site at a convenient time and date. Our ready mix concrete comes batch-ready to your exact specifications, so you can start laying is straight away. Pouring the concrete shed base
If you are using a wheelbarrow, pour the ready mix concrete directly into the framework, using a rake or shovel to spread the surface evenly. The ready mix concrete should sit 10mm or so above the surface of the timber framework to allow for compacting to remove air pockets.
This step will require two people on each end; using a timber plank that is longer than the width of the formwork, move the plank across the surface of the concrete in a sawing motion to compact the concrete so it is level with the top of the formwork. Ensure that there are no holes or dips in corners.
Curing the concrete shed base
The curing process is one of the most important steps for ensuring the durability of your concrete shed base. It is important that the concrete does not dry out too quickly, so if temperatures are expected to exceed 20º, use the mist setting on your hose to moisten the surface a couple of times a day. You can also use a plastic sheet to cover the concrete slab for the first 24 hours.
Whilst you should be able to walk on your new shed base within 48 hours, do not remove the timber formwork or begin construction work on the shed itself until at least 5 days later.
