Why is Concrete Being Considered for Buildings on Mars?
05th September 2019

Scientists have identified concrete as being a suitable material for building shelter on other planets thanks to its strength and durability.

Concrete plans for space exploration

Since the first moon landing 50 years ago, leaps have been made in space exploration technology which will soon make it possible to send humans to Mars. However, space is a dangerous place and the astronauts who make the journey and their equipment will need a safe shelter when they get there to protect them from cosmic radiation and meteorites. Despite all the innovative, space-age technology available to them, scientists have, in fact, turned to one of the oldest building materials on Earth to solve this problem, concrete.

Aleksandra Radlinska of Pennsylvania State University and the principal investigator explains, "on missions to the Moon and Mars, humans and equipment will need to be protected from extreme temperatures and radiation". She goes on to say that "concrete is very sturdy and provides better protection than many materials," which is why they are conducting this research.

Difficultly finding the right mix of concrete

One of the main reasons for this is that concrete can theoretically be made using materials already available on the extra-terrestrial planet, saving a significant amount of money. Concrete is made from a specific blend of sand, gravel and rocks mixed together with water to form a liquid paste. When it sets, concrete forms a dense, solid mass that’s incredibly strong and hard wearing. Scientists believe that the process can be replicated in space, however, before we construct another Colosseum on Mars, there are questions about whether this process that works so well on Earth, will work just as well off planet.

While our experts here at Wright Minimix have perfected the technique of mixing concrete on Earth, the scientists are experimenting with various materials such as cement powder, additives and the amount of water required in order to find a solution that will work on Mars.

Do I need to hire a concrete pump?
16th August 2019

Concrete pumping is an efficient way of delivering ready mix concrete, but is it right for you? Access problems, time and lack of manpower are all reasons to consider a concrete pump.

Your site is difficult to access

If the concrete mixer truck cannot get close to your lay site, then concrete delivery becomes much more challenging. Without a concrete pump, you will have to rely on manual labour and wheelbarrows to get your ready mix concrete from A to B within the timeframe to ensure it doesn’t start to cure. Not only can this be very wasteful, inefficient and costly, it can be downright impossible for larger scale products that require a large volume of concrete.

Hiring a concrete pump negates all these problems; no site is too difficult to access for one of our boom pumps or mini pumps. Capable of pumping up to 180m3 of concrete per hour, our concrete pumps ensure that your concrete mix is delivered on site quickly and affordably. That is the equivalent of nearly 1,800 wheelbarrow loads!

You have time restrictions

If you are working to a tight schedule, then concrete pumping is by far the most efficient method of concrete delivery available. Even if your site is not difficult to access, hiring a concrete pump will ensure that ready mix concrete is laid in the shortest amount of time possible.

You don’t have the manpower

For larger DIY projects, it is highly possible that you won’t have the help or manpower available to help you transport the concrete from the mixer to the correct location in the necessary time. A concrete pump totally removes this concern, allowing you to concentrate on finishing it the way you want.

Capable of pumping concrete in all weathers

Our mini pumps combine efficiency and robustness and are able to keep up with their larger counterparts discharging concrete of S2 consistency and above. Just like all our pumps, the mini pump is also able to deliver its exceptional performance in all weather conditions, so you can be sure your project will be completed in time, no matter what the unpredictable British weather throws at you.

Cost-effective concrete pumping

The Advantages of Concrete
22nd July 2019

If you’re looking for a durable, flexible and attractive building material that’s been trusted for 5,000 years, then look no further than concrete. This traditional material has been around since the ancient Egyptians and offers a huge range of benefits for all kinds of projects in all industries. Here at Wright Minimix, we love concrete and have put together this list of reasons outlining why you should love it too.

Increases energy efficiency

Concrete boasts the ability to both effectively absorb and retain heat in the winter while reflecting it back during the summer to keep the room cool. As well as keeping the user at an optimal temperature, this also increases the building’s energy efficiency, helping both the environment and potentially reducing the price of your heating bills.

Concrete is durable

Concrete’s lifespan is two to three times longer than other common building materials, such as wood, thanks to its high resistance to most chemicals, weather conditions and heavy foot and machine traffic. As an added bonus, its non-combustible nature makes it resistant to fire thus increasing a building’s safety dramatically.

Easy to maintain

Concrete requires virtually zero maintenance as it is such a strong building material. However, to keep it looking at its best, our concrete experts at recommend regular sweeping and quick removal of any spillages.

Concrete comes in a range of finishes

It often surprises people how many options there are out there for concrete finishes. You can choose from a whole host of different looks that are both attractive, practical and can be adapted to fit the needs of your project. For instance, to create a dramatic sweeping floor for an entrance lobby, concrete can he polished to a smooth finish that is both eye-catching and able to withstand constant foot traffic.

A highly versatile building material

From concrete blocks and paving stones to foundations and flooring, the uses of concrete are virtually endless due to its initial flowable, liquid state. This means concrete can be moulded and manipulated into any shape on or off site depending on your requirements. At Wrights Minimix, we supply ready mix concrete that has been made by professionals to the exact requirements of your project so you can be sure you’re using the correct type of concrete for its intended purpose.
