Concrete pumping: what you need to know
16th February 2021

Our concrete specialists break down everything you need to know about concrete pumping and how to calculate the volume of concrete your project will need.

What is a concrete pump?

A concrete pump is a machine used for transferring wet ready mix concrete or liquid screen to the lay site. The two types of concrete pump are boom pumps and boomless pumps.

Boom pumps use a robotic arm to accurately deliver ready mix concrete and screed. Their ability to pump large volumes of concrete quickly makes them a popular choice for large construction sites. Boomless pumps lack the robotic arm. Instead, they transfer concrete via pipes that are laid between the vehicle and the lay site. Our boomless minipump is designed to deliver liquid concrete over 100m vertically as well as 200m horizontally.

How much concrete will you need?

If you’re unsure how much concrete you’ll need for your construction project, our handy volume calculator will help. Simply enter the dimensions of the area that requires concreting to calculate the volume of concrete you’ll need for the job.

Why choose Wright Minimix?

We have the very best machinery at hand, including the UK’s largest concrete pump and the innovative mini pump, which is ideal for delivering concrete to sites with accessibility issues.

Benefits of hiring a concrete pump
25th January 2021

Our concrete specialists explore how hiring a concrete pump can solve accessibility issues, while saving time and resources for your construction project.

Solve accessibility issues

In difficult to access areas that cannot be reached by a concrete mixer truck, concrete delivery becomes a lot more challenging. Without a concrete pump, you’ll be forced to rely on manual labour and wheelbarrows to get your ready mix concrete where you need it. Time constraints are a big concern in this scenario too, as the concrete will need to be transported within a set timeframe to ensure it doesn’t start to cure.

Transporting your concrete this way can be wasteful, inefficient and costly, not to mention downright impossible for large-scale projects that require a large volume of concrete. Hiring a concrete pump solves all the problems, as no site is too difficult to access for our boom pumps or innovative mini pumps

Save time

Concrete pumping is the most efficient method of concrete delivery, making it an ideal choice if you’re working to tight deadlines. Hiring a concrete pump is the best way to guarantee that ready mix concrete is laid in the shortest amount of time possible. Our pumps are capable of pumping up to 180 m3 of concrete per hour, making them a quick and affordable solution for delivering your concrete mix to your site.

Free up manpower

If you’re working on a larger DIY project, chances are you won’t have the necessary manpower to help you transport your concrete from the mixer to where you need it within the required timeframe. A concrete pump helps you get around this, allowing you to focus your manpower where you need it the most.

Wright Minimix has built an unrivalled reputation as providers of efficient concrete delivery using the latest concrete pumps. To find out about hiring a concrete pump for your project, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our friendly team on 0117 985 2090.

Step-by-Step Guide: Preparing Flooring for Liquid Screed
02nd December 2020

The concrete experts at Wright Minimix share their helpful step-by-step guide to preparing your flooring for liquid screed.

Step 1

Remove any debris from the sub floor.

Step 2

Place insulation in two layers. Use dried sand to fill the void around pipes and ensure that this is level before installing the second layer of insulation board.

Step 3

Lay a membrane of 1000 gauge or thicker immediately under the pipework (above the insulation board) as a slip layer, and to prevent leakage of the screed before setting.

Step 4

Install an edging strip around the edges and corners of the wall and attach securely.

Step 5

After laying (but before setting) make sure that you fully seal any shuttering across doorways and steps with expanding foam or mastic. This will prevent leakage.

Step 6

Seal any pipe ducts or holes through walls before placement of the liquid screed.

Installing liquid screed with underfloor heating

When installing liquid screed with underfloor heating, you should follow these steps:

Step 1

Install underfloor heating pipes and ensure that they are clipped every 400mm and more around bends.

Step 2

Make sure that the system is full of water prior to the liquid screed being laid.

Step 3

If using an ‘eggbox’ type pipe system, membrane should be laid under the eggbox. Avoid using small offcuts of eggbox to avoid possibility of floating.

Note: Minimum cover above underfloor heating pipes is 30mm, therefore minimum screed thickness is normally 50mm when using a 16mm UFH pipe.

Top 5 Benefits of a Liquid Screed Floor
21st October 2020

From creating super smooth surfaces to quick drying times, there are many fantastic benefits to using liquid screed for your flooring installation. Read on to discover 5 reasons why it’s such a popular choice.

1)    Liquid screed is quick to install

When you use liquid screed to provide the perfect base for your flooring, you won’t be hanging around for days waiting for us to install it. This is due to the flowing nature of liquid screed which helps make installing it quick and easy.

2)    Faster drying time than other materials

Worried that your project might be delayed because of a wet floor? These worries will be a thing of the past when you use liquid screed. That’s because it dries at a much more rapid rate than other flooring materials. Indeed, it takes only 24-48 hours to dry enough to walk on so you’ll be able to carry on with your project in next to no time.

3)    Reduces the risk of cracking

Our specially developed liquid screed is renowned across the South’s construction companies for its long lasting quality. We use special ingredients that include anti-crack fibres and an anti-shrink agent to help make it incredibly strong and improve its resistance to deformation. We also add a super plasticiser to help provide excellent workability.

4)    Super smooth floors

You won’t have to worry about a lumpy and bumpy surface when you choose liquid screed for your flooring material. It’s flowability means liquid screed is self-levelling which speeds up installation, as previously mentioned, but it also provides a perfectly smooth and even surface ready for your chosen covering.

5)    The perfect partner for underfloor heating

We have perhaps saved the biggest benefit of liquid screed for last – liquid screed is the perfect material for installing underfloor heating. Not only does it manage to cover all the pipework, eliminating any bubbles and gaps, but it can also be installed with low depth which makes the heating system much more efficient.

Wright Minimix’s liquid screed has been specially designed and tested to provide the perfect finish for a range of flooring applications in both residential and commercial settings.
